Surf, Yoga and Whales : 8 days/7 nights Surf Camp for Gays, Lesbians and Friends in Santa Catarina

Santa Catarina, in South Brazil, is a secret Brazilian kept for many years. Known for its gorgeous beaches and mild climate it has grown in recent years as a gay and lesbian-friendly destination.

Praia do Rosa, on the Southern Coast of Santa Catarina, is famous in Brazil for its perfect waves, its rustic-chic guesthouses and restaurants and for receiving the visit of the Southern Right whales in winter.

Due to its shape, the half-moon bay of Rosa is considered a “Disneyland” for surfers, as there is always an option for good surfing, independently of wind or swell direction. Winter sometimes brings big swells that attract pro-surfers, but most of the year it offers good conditions for all abilities.

Adding to that, there is Capitão David: surf coach and owner of the oldest local surf school, established in Rosa since 1995. The Captain, as he is known by his more than 13,000 student/friends, is a friendly character that has taught generations of beginners and trained some serious surfers. His first lesson can last hours and it will teach you more than any other surf school ever did!

For experienced surfers we offer a chance of touring the nearby beaches searching for the best waves in Brazil with a friendly local.
We add to the surf camp, a 2-night stay in Florianopolis, the Magic Island, and a place known for its surfing culture and gay-friendliness since the 80’s!

To make the week even more special, you might have a very close encounter with one of the gentle giants of the seas- the Southern Right Whale.

This will be a Surfing holiday that you will never forget!

Praia do Rosa, on the Southern Coast of Santa Catarina, is famous in Brazil for its perfect waves, its rustic-chic guesthouses and restaurants and for receiving the visit of the Southern Right whales in winter.

Santa Catarina hosts the surfing elite again

Starts today the only Brazilian stage of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, the Santa Catarina Pro.

The competition will be held from 23rd April to 2nd May and will attract a big crowd to Imbituba, on the southern Santa Catarina coast, to watch all the big names in the sport such as the legend Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Andy Irons, fighting for the 2010 title.

The main competition is scheduled for Praia Da Vila beach, but it might be moved to nearby Praia do Rosa if sea conditions change.

Santa Catarina surf culture is huge, having some of the best waves in the country. Now with the full support of the State Tourism board, the Santa Catarina ASP Tour stage reaches its 8th year and should be made into a permanent stop of the World Tour.

Even if you are not a pro-surfer, Santa Catarina has a lot to offer.
Surf schools offer week long, affordable courses for all levels. For those that just want to try for a day, Brazil Ecojourneys offers a 5 days program of local experiences that can include a surf lesson.

Brazil Ecojourneys tips:

  • Conditions for beginners are good year around;
  • Advanced surfers will find the best waves during our winter - June to September- when accommodation is much cheaper and you might share the water with the amazing Southern Right Whales
  • Water temperatures, even in our winter, are never as cold as Californian or English seas
  • Some beaches are closed for surfing during Mullet season- May to June. Consult us.

The Best Time to Enjoy Santa Catarina

Carnival marks the end of the Summer and high season in Brazil.

Santa Catarina, in special, suffers from seasonal tourism, being most visited from December to February.

But for those that are not tied to school's calendar there is no better time of the year to enjoy Santa Catarina coast than March & April: the weather is still hot, the sea is at its warmest, the fantastic beaches are completely uncrowded and prices are much lower.

Check our beach packages for some ideas.

Brazil Ecojourneys tips:

March and April are also ideal months to learn to surf. Besides the good water conditions you are still outside the Mullet fishing season (May-June) that closes down most of the surfing beaches.
